Green Schools Update – Wormery & Waste Reduction

29th Apr 2026

We are delighted to share a positive update on our Green Schools work here in St Colmcille’s Girls NS. Recently, both 5th classes took part in rebedding the school wormery. We were very fortunate to welcome Craig from Composting Ireland, who showed the pupils how to correctly set up and care for the wormery.

The children used a variety of materials including shredded paper, soil, and organic matter to create a suitable environment for the worms. We also used contents from our compost bin to feed them. Going forward, the worms will be fed weekly using fruit peelings and food scraps collected in our classrooms. Over the coming months, this will break down into rich compost which we hope to use in our school garden.

We would also like to sincerely thank our Green School Committee for their continued work in supporting this initiative and ensuring that all bins throughout the school are used correctly. We would also like to thank all teachers and pupils in each class for their continued efforts in separating litter correctly into general waste, recycling, and compost bins.

We are very pleased to report that we have already seen a significant reduction in waste. This is largely due to the introduction of individual cloth towels, which has allowed us to eliminate the use of blue paper tissue. As part of this initiative, we kindly remind parents that each pupil should bring in her cloth towel. If your child has not yet brought one in, please ensure she does so as soon as possible.

All of these efforts are an important part of our journey towards achieving our first Green Flag, and we greatly appreciate your ongoing support at home in reinforcing these environmentally friendly practices.

Kind regards,
Green School Committee
